Country Info
Not far away, in the blue seas of the South Pacific, are the extraordinary islands of Fiji. A scenic and fabled wonderland inhabited by people who invented the true meaning of hospitality.
Fiji is a nation of about 300 islands dotted across 200,000 square miles of sea, and is a multi-cultural society formed by the mingling of Fijian, Indian, European and Chinese lifestyles and influences. Among Fiji's top attractions are the several sun-drenched, palm-fringed island resorts. In fact, most of Fiji's hotels are right beside the sea, offering their guests the romance of the warm tropical Pacific. The people of Fiji welcome visitors.
Climate
An ideal South Seas tropical climate.
Maximum summer temperatures average 30°C and the mean minimum is 23°C.
The winter maximum is 26°C and the mean minimum is 20°C.
Currency

The Fijian dollar is the basic unit of currency, available in denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20 and $50
Coins: 1c, 2c, 5c,10c, 20c, 50c and $1

There is no limit to the amount of money to be brought in. Visitors are allowed to take out currency up to the amount imported.

Language
The official language is English, which is also taught in schools.
The main other languages are Fijian and Hindustani. Chinese and Urdu are also heard in the markets.
Electricity
240 volts, 50 cycles AC.
Fiji has 3 pin power outlets identical to those in Australia and New Zealand. Most hotels have 110 volt converters for shavers, hairdryers etc. 
Timezone
When it is 9am in Fiji it is 7am Sydney same day.

Airport
Fiji has two international airports - Nadi, the principal gateway and Nausori, near Suva.
Airport Tax
Airport Departure tax F$ 20. Children under 12 are exempt
Airport Security charge F$ 5. Children under 12 are exempt
Airport Development charge F$ 5. Children under 12 are exempt
These fees are applicable from 15 May 2003 and will be added and are included in the price of tickets.
Customs

Duty Free 

Visitors are encouraged to go through customs formalities with the least amount of fuss. After collecting luggage there are two signs: Nothing to Declare and Goods to Declare.
Those with nothing to declare will quickly find their way to the concourse outside the hall. Duty Free Concessions for persons 17 years of age and over:

  • 500 cigarettes or
  • 500 gms of cigars, or
  • 500 gms of tobacco, or
  • all three but not exceeding a total of 500 gms
  • Two litres of liquor or four litres of wine or four litres of beer.
  • 114ml of perfume for personal use.
  • Other dutiable goods up to F$ 400 per passenger regardless of age.
  • Personal effects.
  • A number of items classified as duty free.
Passport
Passports must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the period of intended stay. Visas are not required for stays of up to 4 months.
For other than Australian passport holders please check with your travel agent regarding visa formalities.

Getting Around
Business Hours
Light tropical wardrobe. Bathing suits, shorts, T-shirts and "sulus" are a must for both men and women. Visitors should be careful not to offend local sensibilities.
Wearing bikinis and ultrabrief swimming costumes is fine at the resort but not when visiting villages or shopping in town. At such times it is easy to take a sulu to use as a wraparound so no offence is caused.

Credit Cards
Major credit cards are welcomed by most hotels, restaurants, shops, car rental agencies, tours,. cruises and travel agents. American Express, Diners Club, Visa, JCB International and Master Card, are represented in Suva.
